There’s and exception to every rule – OR as I like to say “Hate Chardonnay – Love Chablis!
I sell wine over the phone and one of my first questions to a new customer is “What wines do you enjoy?” This opens the way to many wonderful and interesting answers (some of which I cannot repeat) however one of the most often repeated answers is ‘Hate Chardonnay – love Chablis’
It seems funny to dismiss a grape who’s pedigree has been long-established. Chardonnay is an incredibly versatile and malleable grape and will change its character depending on the region or the wine maker. From Chablis to Champagne and from England to New Zealand. Over 400,000 acres of Chardonnay are planted throughout the world and in more regions than any other grape including Cabernet Sauvignon. So although you will often hear ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) not everyone means it.
For me though, as a merchant, knowing what someone does not like is often as important as knowing what they do like.
If someone ever asked me what I enjoyed drinking I would probably answer
(But if they asked me what I dislike I would probably say ‘Chardonnay!’)
